Three Confirmed Cases of Legionnaires’ Disease in Clark as Officials Investigate Possible Outbreak

CLARK, NJ – Three cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been confirmed by Mayor Sal Bonaccorso in Clark. Totalling 22 confirmed cases in Union County in the past few months that have lead to a total of five deaths so far.

Clark Health Officer Nancy Raymond states that these cases should not cause serious concerns for the public. According to a release from the New Jersey Department of Health, a definitive link between the cases has not been identified, but reported exposures appear to be clustered geographically.

The NJDOH is currently undergoing investigation in conjunction with the CDC to determine the source of the possible outbreak. The investigation involves conducting environmental investigations, collecting samples for Legionella and recommending environmental remediation plans.

In order to prevent the spread of the Legionella bacteria, building water systems need to be tested and monitored  in order to reduce the risk of Legionella growth.
