Suspected Legionnaires’ Outbreak at Newark Senior Apartment Building

Newark, NJ – Newark health officials are currently investigating a suspected outbreak of Legionnaires disease in a senior citizen building. Currently, three cases of the disease have been confirmed.

Legionnaires disease is a serious form of pneumonia caused by exposure to the Legionella bacteria. Symptoms of Legionnaires disease include: cough, fever, chills, shortness of breath, muscle aches, headaches, and diarrhea.

The bacteria is contracted from breathing in mist from water that contains the bacteria, it cannot be spread through contact with individuals affected by Legionnaires. Elderly individuals, individuals with weak immune systems, chronic lung disease, or a history of heavy tobacco use are most at risk of contracting the disease

Health officials have met with the building managers of the building to determine the cost and figure out next steps.

In order to prevent the spread of the Legionella bacteria, building water systems need to be tested and monitored  in order to reduce the risk of Legionella growth. Legionella compliance is a critical concern for facilities and their owners. For more information about protecting your facility with Legionella compliance solutions, contact LCS NYC today!
